Numerous People Unaccounted For Following Craft Transporting Two Hundred Asylum Seekers Goes Down in waters off the Gambian coast.

The shipwrecked vessel was found aground on a sandbank, according to statements.

A minimum of seven people have perished and numerous others are lost after a vessel carrying around 200 migrants attempting to reach the European continent overturned off the coast of Gambia, officials state.

The vessel capsized late Wednesday night in the vicinity of the village of Jinack in the North Bank area and it was afterwards located "grounded on a sandbank", the country's defence ministry stated in a release.

Ninety-six people have been saved to date and a search is continuing for those still missing who were traveling on the sunken boat that was en route to the Canary Islands of Spain.

The dangerous voyage over the Atlantic has grown into a more frequent path for African asylum seekers seeking entry into European nations.

Nearly 47,000 individuals reached the Canaries in 2024 and data indicates in excess of 9,000 migrants have lost their lives during the journey.

Search and Rescue Efforts

After Wednesday's accident, Gambia's naval forces launched a rescue mission, involving several naval vessels and a commercial fishing craft that came to assist, the defense officials said.

Reports indicate several of the victims are not Gambian nationals and that their identities are still being verified.

The deceased of the seven individuals who drowned have been recovered, and 10 of those rescued are reported to be in critical condition and getting immediate medical attention.

A Common Migration Route

This West African nation is a frequent corridor used by asylum seekers attempting to enter Europe, often on hazardous voyages across ocean and terrain.

Over the past few years, the European bloc has established pacts with a number of Maghreb states aimed at curtailing undocumented migration.
