Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had conceded a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or was there ever a thread holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he publicly stated that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to ascertain if they're getting better or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Comeback

At least one man kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived initially under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Finding His Best Role

It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the nature of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
